Peák Barnabás jövőre a SEG Racing Academy csapatában folytatja

Ennek eredményeképpen augusztusban a Quick-Step Floors „gyakornoknak” szerződtette, a Worltour csapat színeiben indult el pl a Gran Piemonte-n, ahol a Top10-ben ért célba.

2019-ben új csapathoz igazol, a SEG Racing Academy-n fejlődhet tovább a tehetséges magyar versenyző.

Rock Machine Blizzard 90-27: Downhill Anywhere!

The Blizzard 90-27 is one of the most exciting bikes in Rock Machine lineup. Thanks to its 170-160 mm suspension travel and aggressive geometry it can descend anywhere with confidence, and isn’t humiliated when the trail changes into a climb.

It’s no blunder this bike is called a “blizzard”: Rock Machine likely to have given this name since it tackles challenging slopes with such tempo, that the snowfall would simply be blown away by the bike’s scud. I guess the name “avalanche” would have been just as perfect!

As you may remember, last year we reviewed another Rock Machine Blizzard to our greatest satisfaction, it was also a top-of-the-range 90, but a 27+ tire size version with less suspension travel. The present Blizzard sibling has longer travel with conventional 27.5 wheels, and so we were eager to find out not only how it compares not only to the competition, but also to the „little brother” we have ridden last year.

Blizzard 90-27 showcases all Rock Machine’s trademark technical features, such as the Floating Pivot Suspension (FPS) system, which — with the addition of Smart Link — responds to impacts coming from the ground with exceptional sensitivity, while still managing to avoid blocking the rear suspension under hard braking. The Sharkspine EVO top tube design is also a trademark of Rock Machine bikes, and the Blizzard makes use of this advanced frame construction. The tube shape resembling the shark’s back provides lower standover for the frame to aid changing position over the bike, consequently it allows a rider of shorter statue to choose a larger frame size with a longer cockpit. You can read about this design in greater detail following this link.

According to current trends, the Blizzard 90-27 features concealed cable routing and a tapered head tube along with a BOOST 148 × 12 mm thru axle at the back for a stronger rear wheel interface.

The 160 mm travel and FPS system provide excellent downhill performance for this bike, and the suspension range puts the Blizzard right in the middle of the enduro bike category. Rock Machine also defines the bike for this type of riding, so the intended application is a clear cut. The heart of the system is top class rear shock, the Rock Shox Super Deluxe RC3 DebonAir, providing a multitude of adjustment possibilities, hence allowing the Blizzard to be set up perfectly for the given terrain and condition. The 3-stage compression dampening adjustment is ideal if you not only want to roll on descends, but also pedal. In the so-called “pedal” and “lockout” modes, the rear suspension moves much less under pedaling, wasting much less energy from rider input. The lower attachment point of the shock is also unique: instead of the conventional pivot mounting, it is bolted first to a „Y” shaped piece, which in turn is fixed in two points to the rear swing arm. The so-called Smart Link transmits forces from the rocker with maximum utilization of the suspension travel without the undesirable „shutting off” in the last third of its travel. The 2019 Blizzard model will come with the Super Deluxe Coil RCT, featuring a steel spring instead of air, thereby further enhancing sensitivity, and cutting down on overheating issues on extreme long slopes under heavier riders.

A Rock Shox Lyrik RC with a 170 mm travel performs the suspension duties in front, which is the perfect choice for Enduro riding. It’s plenty strong, stiff, has adjustment for rebound and low-speed compression dampening, in a word it’s everything one could ask from a fork designed for this application.

Shifting duties are handled entirely by the SRAM GX set, it’s a 1×12 system with a 32T BOOST crankset and a 10-50T rear cassette. This gearing is more or less adequate for most riding conditions, the low range is perfect for the bike allowing it to tackle any uphill gradient, but since it can be ridden so fast on the descents, you may sometimes run out of gear flying downhill. Mind you, this only happens at insane speeds! It is also possible to modify the gearing by replacing the front chain ring with something bigger, something I would recommend if the riding involves more downhills.

I consider the brake choice for the Blizzard 90-27 to be a bit from left field, since TRP hydraulic disc brakes on production bikes is a rare sight these days. Moreover the TRP Slate G-Spec HD-M820 is specifically designed for extreme MTB use, demonstrated by its 4 piston construction and the 200 mm front, 180 mm rear discs. I also have to mention that they look darn good!

Concerning the wheel set, WTB STP i29 rims are laced to Bitex hubs, resulting in a sturdy construction, making it an ideal choice from Rock Machine designers. The tires are also from the WTB range, the Vigilante offers an aggressive tread pattern and full tubeless compatibility.

With the exception of the saddle, all accessories – seat post, handlebar and stem – come from the Race Face Aeffect series. The stem is a mere 35 mm long, handlebar rise is also 35 mm, along with a 35 mm clamp diameter. The dropper seat post breaks with this magic number, since it can be lowered by no less than 125 mm from the handlebar.

After all this technical information, it’s time to look at what is the Blizzard 90-27 like on the trails. The design and appearance is always a subjective, but no one I spoke to has yet to say that this bike is ugly. The appearance is certainly unique, I personally love the striking color scheme, which demonstrates the bikes awesome power.

After having spent enough time inspecting the bike, Rock Machine engineers set the pressure of the front and rear suspension elements, so I’ve finally had the chance to test ride the bike. It did not take long for us to shake down, I felt at home in the Blizzard’s saddle right from the very first moment. This was certainly a promising sign, since it’s generally hard for me to get accustomed to the frame geometry and handling of endure bikes. I quickly realized that the Blizzard 90-27 enjoys tough, challenging terrain, which is not at all surprising, since it was designed primarily for enduro riding. It commands steep descends, downhill slopes with plenty of obstacles, on these, it demonstrates all its prowess. The Blizzard 90-27 will tackle everything thrown in front of it, gets rid of obstacles, essentially making the rider feel like he is on a flying carpet. This is partly due to the fact that the rear suspension is very sensitive, it starts easily and moves sensibly through its not inconsiderable stroke. The front fork and the frame are well-matched, they can easily be set up to work in perfect harmony. The frame has more or less the same linear motion as the Lyrik fork, they are a match made in heaven!

I have no reason to complain about the steering either: the Blizzard has a well thought-out geometry, it is easy to turn in tight corners. Fortunately I did not experience my usual caveat concerning long travel full-suspension bikes: the rear’s reluctance to carry out the turn due to frame flexibility. Before the test ride, I was very curious about the TRP brakes, so I intentionally tried to find its boundaries during the ride. I did not succeed, since they did their job without any problems on trails at the bike park. I even made a hair-raising descend on an extremely steep, world-class downhill course, and I still could not make the brakes fade or heat up excessively.

Intended to be a top-end Enduro MTB, the Blizzard 90-27 was designed to cope with not only steep and long descents, but also rolling efficiently on flat land and tackling uphill sections on the trails. Climbing is aided by a 3-position compression dampening on the rear shock, but its Floating Pivot Suspension with a floating shock position also makes seated climbing as efficient as possible. It’s made specifically for the bike’s long rear travel, so even in open position it does not induce too much movement at the back. Once the compression dampening is increased, all suspension bob can be avoided when standing out of the saddle. Naturally the Blizzard 90-27 does not climb like a XC bike (it was not designed for fast pace uphills), but it allows the rider to get to the top of all but the steepest, longest and technically challenging climbs. The 500% range offered by the SRAM 1×12 transmission system also plays a major role in the Blizzard’s climbing prowess. The low end of the gear range may even be too much of a good thing, since the 50T sprocket is only needed when the rider is about to fall on his back.

If I was forced to put the Rock Machine Blizzard 90-27 in a “shoebox” category, I would chose enduro, just as the manufacturer had done. But this bike has more cards to play. It could just as well serve as a competitive downhill bike, at least here in Eastern Europe. I presume the new 2019 model version with the rear coil shock will be apt handling any DH course, and the rider would not be stranded at the bottom in case the lift broke down! So if you’re looking a bike which can perform both as an enduro machine and DH rig, the Rock Machine Blizzard certainly fits the bill.

Northwave 2019: Niche Footwear, New XC and Road Shoes

We found a lot of significant novelties at the Northwave booth of this year’s Eurobike. In a nutshell 2019 will see the introduction of shoes for platform pedals for those who prefer not to use a clipless system, most road and XC shoes will all be completely revamped and the renowned Italian brand will expand its vast clothing range towards casual style MTB clothing.

There are many branches of cycling where clipless pedal systems are rarely or never employed. For example, BMX riders and extreme mountain bikers prefer large platform pedals, moreover, practicality and simplicity overrides are other factors in leisure cycling and commuting. And there are those, who just do not like the idea of the fixed pedal-shoe connection. For this not so insignificant number of riders, choosing an advanced cycling specific shoe is not that easy, since manufacturers concentrate their product ranges on the clipless market. Due to the size of the market, this is especially relevant in Hungary, so a suitable footwear offering stability, efficiency and safety on a flat or platform pedal is far and few between. In 2019, Northwave enters this segment of the footwear market, introducing not one, but two new models called the Clan and the Tribe.

For both of these new niche shoe models, Northwave has paid particular attention to durability, as they are often used for extreme cycling activities, involving large impacts on shoes. In addition, the Italian designers put a great effort into the creation of a sole with adequate grip and rigidity to aid stability and efficiency.

Between the two models, the Clan is the more advanced, which is reflected in both the upper and sole. The latter consists of three layers: starting with a lightweight, vibration-absorbing EVA foam, then a rigid middle TPU layer is added with special elastic zones aiding adaptation to personal anatomy. Finally the Clan’s sole features a particularly adherent outer layer. This was developed in conjunction with the French rubber specialist, Michelin. Aptly named Gecko+, it is said to be the most durable material on the market, nevertheless it’s tactile, offering excellent grip in both in dry and wet conditions. The design of the Gecko+ was inspired by the top-of-the-class Michelin Jet XCR tire. The upper part of the Clan is made of a specially developed, ventilated synthetic material, reinforced in some important areas to aid durability. The Clan will be available in 3 colors.

The Tribe model’s sole is somewhat more simple and a bit more flexible than the top-tier Clan, nevertheless it also received the Gecko+ sole developed in cooperation with the French rubber specialist. It also features the same tread pattern. Apparently the upper design is also different, there is less protective material, and there is some compromise in ventilation according to the Northwave literature. So the Tribe is better suited to street wear, general cycling and daily transportation, while the Clan is oriented to the more stringent requirements of extreme cycling disciplines. The Tribe is fashionable, an excellent alternative to both regular footwear and the sport-specific clipless shoes, and it’ll be available in 5 colors to best match any type of clothing

In 2019, the new Extreme Pro will become the top-of-the-line road shoe model at Northwave. Both the shoe’s upper and sole are completely new development. The XFrame 2® represents the ultimate level in the upper, which guarantees a perfect pressure-free fit — just like its famed predecessor. In addition, Northwave returns to the dual SLW2 fastening system, which is good news for narrow-footed road cyclists, avoiding the difficulty of precise adjustment. (For wide or normal foot, both the previous and the new systems work equally well.) The design of this new flagship road model is unique, and both classic color and black and white version will be available.

The sole is a story of it’s own. It employs the new hi-tech PowerShape Carbon technology, featuring a 100% carbon base with the highest rigid rating of 15.0 on Northwave’s stiffness index. Apart from the stiffness, it introduces a new arch support – similar to the Revolution model we tested previously – in order to provide maximum energy transfer while pedaling. The Extreme Pro is expected to satisfy the most exigent, performance-oriented road cyclists, it’s a long-awaited model with a classic design.

In 2019, Northwave’s flagship XC shoe will be the Ghost Pro, sharing the same XFrame 2® upper construction with the Extreme Pro, along with necessary reinforcements in the vulnerable locations required for MTB riding.

The sole technology has also been enhanced in comparison with the previous top-of-the-range model, the lightweight, full-carbon Hyperlight XC base receives a tread designed jointly developed with Michelin. These are actually rubber pads from a special compound, offering both high level of durability and traction, as expected from such a prestigious name in tire technology.

The novelties at Northwave do not end with the above-mentioned top-of-the-range models. The Italian brand’s cycling footwear lineup will receive a facelift, and there are 5 completely new road and 5 XC MTB shoes in the Northwave 2019 lineup. Another major change is that the buckled closure system will completely disappear from the range, limiting the choice to velcro-fastening and the micrometric dial system offering the finest of adjustment. In addition, some popular Northwave models will see a change in name: e.g. the popular Scorpius will be found under the Origin designation in 2019.

Northwave will also introduce a new segment in the clothing range. MTB all-mountain riders preferring the more casual, a loose-fitting style will be able to choose from several brand new jerseys, shorts and t-shirts, which are also available as complete collections. So if you are not a fan of the tight bike clothing used by the competitive riders, the venerable Italian brand provides fashionable baggy shorts and loose-fitting tops.

Cube bikes helped Wanty-Groupe Gobert to become top pro-continental team

For the third consecutive year, Wanty-Groupe Gobert has become the top ranked pro-continental road team, so next year they will likely to be invited to the Tour de France and the biggest races on the World Tour calendar.

At the end of each season, the International Cycling Federation (UCI) announces the team rankings. Just as in 2016 and 2017, the 13 UCI race victories in 2018 put the Belgian Wanty-Groupe Gobert to the top place in the pro-continental division. Since pro-continental teams have the opportunity to start World Tour events, these three consecutive top placings give high hopes for the team to enter the most prestigious events on the pro calendar. For example, top pro-continental teams can get automatic invitation in the biggest stages races, such as Tour de France.

Our regular readers may already know that Wanty-Groupe Gobert is proud to ride Cube bikes. We have reported on this collaboration when we visited the Cube headquarters in Germany. In mass start road competitions, the Belgian team uses custom-painted Cube Litening C:68 bikes with Shimano Dura Ace equipment, and in time trial events the riders get on board their futuristic-looking Aeriums. It’s important to note the Aerium model shown in the 2018 Cube product catalog is not „UCI-compatible”, it’s a triathlon-specific model, but Wanty-Groupe Gobert gets a special version for racing at UCI-organized events. Soon the public can also purchase the above-mentioned Aerium model variant.

For a limited time, you can purchase a wide variety of Cube bikes at discounted prices, including the top Litening C:68 model ridden to so many victories by the Wanty-Groupe Gobert team. For details, CLICK HERE.

Shimano 2019 Part 1 – Resurrection of XTR

Shimano XTR M9100 2019 - az alumínium csillag segít alacsonyan tartani a tömeget

We have written extensively about the new Shimano products for 2019, however we were able to see and experience in person what the Japanese giant has in store at the Eurobike trade exhibition. In this two-part article, we would like to deal with the most important novelties in detail.

The newly introduced 9100 XTR group set is not the direct result of the usual meticulous refinements which characterizes the brand, but a complete revamp of their top-tier MTB components, loaded with ingenious hi-tech innovations. The mountain bike segment of the industry seems to develop at a rather fast rate, hence the previous XTR 9000 series – introduced back in 2014 – is already showing signs of being outdated. Five years is quite a span in modern technology, the requirements and expectations have changed greatly in cycling, especially concerning MTB bikes.

By contrast, the former 9000 Dura Ace or the 6800 Ultegra road group set introduced in the same time frame as the XTR 9000 is still competitive even on the highest level of racing. In absolute terms, the newly introduced road components bring important refinements, but the change can still be considered subtle. On the other hand, the MTB market has clearly shifted from a double to a single chainring drive system in the previous 5 year period, and Shimano’s main competitor has already debuted an affordable version of its 1×12 speed group set. Such a landslide change in technology forced the Japanese to come up with a blow rivalling Pearl Harbor to regain its market dominance. So a deadly weapon was developed in the form of the new XTR, it now reached the target, and virtually detonated the MTB component market. Shimano actually carried out a double prong attack: the XTR 9100 component line will be available both a single as a double chainring option, meeting virtually every need on the market.

Shimano XTR M9100 2019 – 1x crankset variant

Let’s start with one of the gems in the new XTR, the crankset. The 24 mm diameter axle and the hollow forged aluminum manufacturing technology remains the same, but the left crank arm receives a completely new method of mounting. The solution is similar to that used in the decade old M970, where the left arm is fixed by a screw threaded inside the axle, while the bearing pre-tension can be adjusted by a ring attached to the arm.

It is a complete novelty that the traditional arms holding the chainring have disappeared from the right side arm, sprockets of various sizes (30/32/34/36/38T) are fitted using a direct mount system and a central bolt attachment. The chainrings used for the single drive system have a new tooth profile, which prevents the chain from falling off. In case of a dual chainring setup, the large sprocket is mounted to the right crank arm as in the case of the single ring version, and the smaller sprocket is bolted onto it. For the time being, only a 38-28T combination will be available, due to the restriction of the front derailleur’s 10T capacity. It is a great advantage that the cranks are not specific to one or the other configuration, so they can be easily converted from one-by to two chainrings and vica-versa.

The finish of the crankset is simply stunning, worthy of a top-of-the-line premium product.

Shimano XTR M9100 2019 – two cassette options

The previously undervalued rear cassette has now regained some of its charm due to the single front drive. It has now become one of the most important element of the shifting system, utilizing incredible technologies and machining. So much so, that the 12-speed XTR cassette is one of the main novelties of the 9100 set, moreover it is attached to the wheel hub by the way of a special cartridge body named Micro Spline. This was necessitated due to the fact that the HG type Shimano cassette body could not take a sprocket any smaller than 11T. The newly developed Micro Spline system permits the mounting of a 10 tooth smallest sprocket, thereby greatly increasing the gear range of the 1×12 drive system. The three largest sprockets of the 10-51 cassette are made from super strong aluminum alloy, the middle ones are titanium alloy mounted on heavily machined aluminum spider arms, while the smallest sprockets are tool quality steel elements placed one by one on the cassette shaft. The weight of the 10-51T cassette is 359 grams, exactly the same as the top model from Shimano’s main competitor. For those who are bothered by the large jumps between the gear steps, Shimano offers a 10-45T cassette option, which can be used with either 2×12 or 1x12s drive systems. Even more surprisingly, the new XTR 9100 offers an 11 speed cassette option as well, which utilizes the above-mentioned technologies, and can be retrofitted to previous group sets from the Japanese giant (e.g. XTR 9000). This option clearly targets the demanding weight-weenie crowd and racers who still have older components.

Shimano XTR M9100 2019 – the aluminum arms help to keep the weight low despite the huge sprockets

It is important to note that the sprockets are not only machined to help the chain onto the larger neighbor (e.g. lower gears), but also in the other direction. This cuts gear change lag to a third. The chain is made with hollow pins and uses a patented joining method called QUICK-LINK.

There will be no less than 3 different rear derailleurs available, the one-by system has a mid and a long cage option, the former works only with the 10-45T cassette, the latter is 28 mm closer to the ground, but it can handle the gigantic 10-51T cluster variant. Model RD-M9120 designates the sole two chainring compatible rear derailleur, and it can only by paired with the 10-45T cassette option on the rear wheel. All derailleurs are Shadow RD+ designs with an increase in spring resistance in order to keep the chains stable on even most challenging terrain. The new 13-spoke pulley wheel is also a novelty, allowing more precise changes with less resistance.

The front derailleur features a Side Swing mechanism, which is compatible with a variety of mounting options. Itis interesting that Shimano offers simple, adjustable chain guides for single chainring systems. These small plastic parts add minimal weight, but prevent the chain from dropping in extreme cases — e.g. falling with the bike) –, where chain re-installation is often a lengthy process.

Shimano XTR M9100 2019 – shifter for the rear derailleur

The shifter for the rear derailleur is available with two clamp variations. Using the I-Spec EV Brake Arm allows common attachment with the brake lever along with a wider latitude for adjustment found on the previous versions of the I-Spec concept. Of course, there will also be a traditional clamp version available for those who choose not to ride with Shimano brake systems. Compared to the 9000 series, the shifter mechanism have been fine-tuned resulting in reduced friction, hence Shimano claims it that operating these new shifters require 35% less effort and 20% saving in time.

Shimano XTR M9100 2019 – shifter for the front derailleur

In case of a double chainring setup, the shift lever for the front derailleur does not work the way we have come to expect from with Shimano, it has only a single shift lever that operates as a two-position switch. This results in a much simpler in construction, and is also also easier to operate, learning the shifting technique requires just a few clicks.

Shimano SL-MT800-IL

For those using a single chainring setup, there is a, I-Spec EV left side shifter which can operate a compatible cable actuated „dropper post”.

Shimano’s the new hub technology has been covered in great detail by my colleague.
In a nutshell, the venerable, well-established cone bearing system remains, but this also entails that it will not be possible to convert the hubs to different axle standards. The main development is the new cartridge body system I mentioned previously, which houses the so-called Scylence mechanism, allowing for extremely quiet operation and fast (7.6°) engagement.

Shimano XTR M9100 2019 – XC brake lever

Two different brake models were introduced for this new XTR group set. Both come with I-Spec EV clamps, and its position on the bar has also been redesigned. It is fascinating to see that apart from the clamp, there is another portion of the brake body that leans onto the handlebar, ensuring more secure attachment and offering a stiffer braking feel. Operating the lever for a given braking power requires less force compared to previous Shimano models.

The two-piston brake body for the XC variant is a one piece construction, it’s 26 grams lighter than the 9000 series predecessor. The alternative 4-piston model is intended for enduro applications, it offers greater braking power and better heat dissipation.

In the next part of this Shimano 2019 product introduction we’ll be showing you the road and e-bike novelties.

Giant Trance 29 “2” Review – When Less is More

giant_trance_29

Following a 4-year break, Giant will reintroduce a new 29-er trail bike in 2019. The new Trance 29 features the category’s smartest suspension system paired with a progressive frame geometry.
[Link to published news item: ]

With the new Trance 29, Giant re-enters the 29-er trail MTB market segment, and we can be sure that the world’s largest bicycle manufacturer has carefully planned this development. They designed a unique trail machine filled with novel engineering solutions.

What makes the Trance 29 so special? First of all, the 115 mm suspension travel at the back seems quite modest in the context of the „more is better” view so prevalent in these days. The Giant says that the characteristics of the Maestro suspension system – they have been developing for over a decade now – requires less suspension travel to perform the same performance compared to other systems on the market. It is worth noting that the Maestro is a special multi-linkage system, effectively utilizing the spring travel throughout the complete range, with a light and sensitive start at the stroke and no significant impact on either pedaling or braking. The system has performed very well in the past, but Giant has made major refinements, providing the Trunnion mount and the Advanced Forged Composite upper rocker arm for increased stiffness and strength, which renders the system even more independent from pedaling or braking forces.

If one was not be able to spot the most recent trends in MTB geometry just by looking at the bike, the frame geometry chart clearly shows the marked difference from previous models. The chain stay is quite short, while the top tube is long, the head tube is shallow (66.5 degrees), and the fork offset is at 44 mm, so this bike can be ridden steadily even on steep downhills without negatively effecting the climbing ability or drive efficiency.

The model I tested is made from Giant’s well-proven ALUXX SL aluminum tubing, but it’s also available in carbon for the “Advanced” series. The top tube features a pronounced curved shape, leaving plenty of space for movement over the frame. This also allows a secure long weld „seam” at the down tube junction, resulting in a rigid and strong front triangle. In keeping with today’s trends, the cables are all concealed inside the frame, the steering column is oversized (OverDrive system), along with the compulsory press fit bottom bracket and the BOOST standard wheels – all these factors make the Trance 29 a modern and technologically advanced trail bike.

Despite being a “mere” basic model, the Trance 29 “2” features Fox suspension elements both front and back. The fork is a Fox 34 Float Rythm with a 130 mm travel, and comes with a handlebar mounted locking mechanism and a 15 × 110 mm wheel mount. This excellent fork is backed up by the Fox Float DPS Performance rear shock which also offers supreme performance, along with rebound and the compression dampening adjustments. Setting the latter to its extreme position – by way of turning the blue lever – the rear suspension is virtually locked out.

Shifting and drivetrain duties are handled by the brand new SRAM 1 × 12 NX Eagle group set, with the sole exception of the cranks, which is a Truvativ model. Actually this does not mean a deviation from the SRAM brand, since the Truvativ models are also designed and made by the American component manufacturer, the main difference being the less elaborate and evidently cheaper chainring compared to the standard SRAM offering. With the new NX Eagle set the 1×12 transmission enters a lower price segment, which also helps to keep the price more reasonable for this Trance 29. The afore-mentioned crank set comes with a 30T chainring which is paired with a 11-50T cassette on the rear wheel. This gear range can withstand serious uphill efforts, as you will read below. The bottom bracket is an interesting design: first you would think that it is some kind of threaded system, but a more careful inspection will reveal that we are dealing with the Press Fit adapter component of the brand new SRAM GXP Dub system.

Just as the crank set, the brake is also a modest model in the SRAM range. The Guide T is meant to represent a compromise regarding price and performance, and comes with both 180 mm front and rear discs.

We all know that Giant not only produces excellent bike frames but also high quality components, so our test bike comes with the Giant Tracker Performance wheel set. Boost standard hubs can be found both front and back, laced to XCT 29 rims, which the manufacturer calls “tubeless ready compatible”. In contrast to most bikes on the market, these are not only tubeless compatible, but ARE tubeless, since everything is provided for tubeless tire installation straight from the box. The bike is shipped with the aggressive Maxxis Minion 29 × 2.3 tires – the personal favorite of the editor of this website – and since it’s a tubeless setup, we can use them without inner tubes from day one!

Furthermore, all the other components on the bike (handlebar, stem, saddle, seat post) also boast the “Giant” inscription. So in essence the drive, shifting and braking components are from one manufacturer, and the rest from the Taiwanese brand. This is clearly not a disadvantage in case of the Giant Trance 29 “2”: the 40 mm stem and the 780 mm wide handlebar setup is perfect match for the frame, likewise the well-performing dropper post is a must for such an aggressive modern trail bike.

On the trails
Immediately after the first pedal strokes I felt pleased on board the new Trance 29. On one hand, there was the familiarity due to the Maestro suspension: my own bike used to have this system a few years ago and I had one in this irresistible ice blue color!

First of all, the mechanics at the Czech brand store set the suspension for me and my riding style, they installed my trusty pedals, and then showed me around in the mountains overlooking the town in the course of a rather longish ride. The terrain was perfect for testing, since there were two ways to get to the top of the mountain: one via an easy to access fire road which circled upwards for what seemed an eternity, and the other was more or less straight up on a surprisingly steep trail. First time around I chose the more difficult path, since I wanted to find out how well the NX Eagle group set and this modern trail bike can cope with such steep gradients. I was impressed that even though the front end of the Trance 29 is rather high due to the 130 mm travel fork, the bike can easily be negotiated on such insane gradients, and it’s no problem keeping the balance even at extreme slow speeds. The handlebar did not want to “flop” during quick turns, which is often the case with trail bikes having a progressive frame geometry. If a slightly longer stem had been installed, I presume the Trance 29 would have more or less behaved just like a cross country MTB. Compared to its relatively low price, the NX Eagle fulfils all expectations regarding gear range and shifting performance. It’s clearly a great product for this market segment, so SRAM can have high hopes concerning sales for the next few years at least.

After a short photo shoot on the top of the hill came the real joy of MTB riding: the descent back to the town. I made the necessary adjustments in the suspension, dropped the saddle, and bombed the downhill section. It’s hard to put into words what this little machine can do. There were gullies, stones, logs, washouts, but nothing could beat the Trance 29: it was always easy to keep the control, and the bike dealt with all the trail had in store. The front and rear suspension moved in sync, creating a perfect harmony between the wheels. The less than usual travel at the back could never be felt, the 115 mm – just as Giant says – proved to sufficient. The DH experience was further enhanced by the aggressive tread of the Maxxis tires, providing excellent traction, especially at low pressure allowed by the tubeless setup. I was a little confused by the performance these tires, since I tend to prefer faster tires, while this is clearly optimized for traction. I have to say that the brakes were the only weak link during the ride: they were all right, and they do not heat up excessively on long descents, but there is unfortunately a real lack of power, possibly due to not having been bedded in fully.

I also used this bike on asphalt and lighter terrain, but it was clear that it was not designed for these duties. One could take weekend excursions and MTB tours on it, but then it would be advisable to immediately change the aggressive tires for something with less tread. There is no need for the outmost traction in these situations, and the Minion prefers the exciting trails over the mundane gravel roads.

All in all, Giant has managed to blend all its know-how and prowess for the Trance 29, so it’s no surprise that it is becoming one of the most popular trail bikes on the market. I cannot but recommend it, especially for the rider who is looking for a MTB for challenging terrain with virtually no compromise. It can tackle the wildest of descends, but make the upward part of the ride experience just as fun.

Az MKSZ is segíti a másfél méter kampányt

A BKK és a BKV is csatlakozott a kerékpáros közlekedés biztonságát szolgáló kampányhoz.

A Magyar Kerékpáros Szövetség éves szinten körülbelül 140 versenyén képviseli a másfél méter kampány üzenetét. Princzinger Péter, a szövetség elnöke a sajtótájékoztatón elmondta:

Révész Máriusz közölte: a biztonságos előzési oldaltávolság megtartását népszerűsítő matricával ellátott buszok fognak közlekedni a fővárosban, illetve megállókban is kihelyeznek erre figyelmeztető táblákat.

Hozzátette: az Országgyűlés elé kerülő KRESZ módosítási csomagban szerepel a 1,5 m-es előzési oldaltávolság előírása is, a jelenlegi megfelelő oldaltávolság meghatározás helyett.

A 7020-as félváltókarok formája sokkal esztétikusabb és jobban kézre áll, gyakorlatilag nincsen lényeges különbség a felnifékeshez képest.

Viszont a tányérok síkjai távolabb kerültek egymástól, ennek köszönhetően már hivatalosan is használható akár 410 mm-es láncvillákkal készülő tárcsafékes (135/142-es sarutávolságú) bringákkal.

Felnifékek terén létezik kétcsavaros direct mount, továbbá hagyományos változat is.

Mindezt összevetve azonnal lecserélném ilyenre a meglévő hagyományos hátsó váltóm a gravel bringámon.

A D-Fly egységgel használható kijelzők

52 évesen a Paris-Roubaix-n?

A Paris-Roubaix győzelme 20. évfordulóján, vagyis jövőre 2019-ben, szeretne újra rajthoz állni a legendás versenyen.
