Neuzer has a long and rich tradition in the Hungarian bicycle industry, so it was no surprise to see them at Eurobike 2018, providing the industry and the international media a good opportunity to take a close look at their offerings in the forthcoming year. We met some familiar Neuzer bikes in new outfits, as well as an interesting new bike at Europe’s largest bicycle exhibition.
It is important to mention that Neuzer has a manufacturing plant of considerable size in Esztergom, just north of the capital, moreover the brand is not only supplying a variety of bike models to the domestic market, but also exports large quantities of urban models to one of the main bicycle markets in Europe, the Netherlands. So it was no surprise to see Neuzer choosing to take part in the ever-popular exhibition in Friedrichshafen, a sensible way to showcase bikes to foreigners, hopefully expanding the export end of the business. And for us, well, it was an interesting experience to have the first look at the 2019 Neuzer range of bikes and equipment at Eurobike, when the plant is located a riding distance from our offices… (Last comment by the editor 🙂
Apart from being available commercially in retail outlets, Neuzer bicycles also serve as post delivery vehicles as well as performing “public duties” in one of the ever-growing number of bike share programs found in larger cities in Europe. In order to demonstrate this, a Neuzer community bike was exhibited at Eurobike, directly from the bike-share fleet in Bratislava. The clever lock is one of the most fascinating elements of the bike, but the huge display and all the controls on the cockpit also deserve a mention, worthy of a community bicycle in the 21st century. The basket, mudguard and integrated lighting could not be omitted from such a bike, as its main purpose is to make urban transport cleaner, cheaper, easier and more practical.
I also met a couple of familiar “faces” at the Neuzer booth. I’m not referring to the staff we know so well from the brand’s offices, but bike models which were “wearing” a black paint disguise during our last encounter this spring. We actually rode and reviewed most models exhibited Friedrichshafen, and indicating in the articles that it was not the final design: there had not been enough time to put the final cosmetic touches on these fresh models. Now we finally had a chance to see the finished products, and are ready to show them to our readers. The color design elements of the 2019 Neuzer range can be termed as trendy, though in some cases I tend to prefer some of the black pre-production samples that arrived at our office in spring. I have to admit that I like simple-looking bikes, fortunately beauty is in the eye of the beholder….
The exception to the above is the Neuzer X400 trekking bike, which proved to be much more impressive in the final design, still representing a good-value, and many will probably fall in love with it especially at such a modest price. We had absolutely nothing bad to say in the review.
The Whirlwind 200 road bike was featured in our article as a “dark horse”, which is clearly misnomer based on the production version we saw at Eurobike. (Now I have to go back to change the title in the review.) Neuzer’s entry-level “asphalt chopper” clearly fits the newest trends of affordable road bikes.
The road bike range receives a newcomer for next year is the Whirlwind 100, which will be available in both men’s and women’s version. The new model represents the entry level into the road bike segment with the Shimano Claris components, next season we can expect an even cheaper alternative in the Whirlwind “family” with a very basic group set.
The new 2019 Neuzer design shows a unified picture, the Jumbo and the Duster range also feature the same design elements and colors as seen on the other bikes. These two model families offer value-oriented entry-level 27.5 “and 29” mountain bikes.
Few people know that Neuzer has a carbon frame MTB model called Cougar, the brand’s top-level offering features a Suntour Raidon fork and 2×10 Shimano SLX components.
Neuzer has not missed a beat concerning e-bikes, three different drive systems are available, built into several bike designs. We have already tested one of the models exhibited at Eurobike: you can read the Neuzer E-650B test here.
I have yet to mention one of the stronger by segments sold under the Neuzer brand name: the manufacturer is locally best known for its classic urban bikes, and fortunately there were a lot of them at this show. A wide variety colors and equipment choices are available for 2019, for those interested in simple trendy urban bikes, the Ravenna, Venezia, Balaton, Danube models should be at the top of the shopping list.
Many of us had a Neuzer bicycles when we were kids, which is not a coincidence, since the brand is considered a specialist of this segment as well, producing a variety of sizes, colors and equipment for the young generation. At the Eurobike booth there were few examples of these small bikes to demonstrate the experience they gathered in the past three decades.
